Mac OS X Server 10.2.5

I just upgraded to 10.2.5 server on my Blue & White G3 with disastrous results. The machine boots to a Blue Screen of Death and the desktop never appears. I can SSH into it & AFP works, but the web server and most other services don’t work.

  1. It probably goes without saying, but you've booted into Single User Mode and run fsckd?

You might also SSH in, back up your netinfo database, and reinstall. Then put in place your old NetInfo database. Of course, if you've just a few users on this system, you might simply re-create them after a fresh re-install.

I read another account of someone having problems with 10.2.5 server on a B/W G3. I'll see if I can track it down….for commisseration alone perhaps. 🙂

  2. The problem seems to be with loginwindow. Before, I was getting an error that it was unable to launch it prebound. After I did an update_prebinding, I'm now getting the following message in system.log:

Apr 15 16:13:09 blueg3 init: getty repeating too quickly on port /dev/console, sleeping

I'm also facing the same situation… My computer was in the grey screen and not starting up… I went into the S and V modes and got the "init: getty repeating too quickly on port /dev/console, sleeping" on repeat. I have no idea what is going on.

  4. I think I ended up re-installing and re-applying the upgrade.
